RETINOBLASTOMA

Retinoblastoma

(picture, source: http://www.kellog.umich.edu)

When I took up RETINOBLASTOMA as a topic for my report at college, I was very excited. For a long time, I wanted to actually study the disease and know all about it.

BUT what surprised me is the strange look on my classmates faces when I told them of my choice. Masters in science students didn’t know what “Retinoblastoma” was. Most of them didn’t even know that the disease could be related to the “eye”. It was really shameful.

For those who don’t know, Retinoblastoma is a tumor of the retina (a delicate multi-layered lining of the inner eyeball). It mostly affects children less than 5 years of age. It starts with the appearance of white blotches in the eye (leukocoria) and can affect one or both the eyes. Most of the times the treatment is Enucleation, which means surgical removal of the eye.

What makes RETINOBLASTOMA a deadly disease is the fact that there is so less awareness about it. It is comparatively very rare than other cancers but it is a very cruelly crippling disease for the children. It can spread or metastasize outside of the eye to the brain, the spinal cord and even the bones.

If detected early, the treatment can be directed towards vision preservation. These days Chemotherapy, EBRT (external beam radiation therapy), Thermotherapy, Cryotherapy are being successfully used as the various treatment modalities.

EYES are the most beautiful organ that an human being can possess. They not only see but even talk, feel and do things that most of the organs can’t.

If masters students are unaware about the disease, how can you expect normal people to be aware of it???

Children are the future of every country. As responsible adults, it’s our duty that they are provided with a normal and healthy life. Their eyes need to learn and appreciate the nature’s beauty. They must be able to build a secure tomorrow for the betterment of the world.

It’s necessary that people know about retinoblastoma and it’s possible consequences.

It’s a request to all. If your child or anyone you know is suffering from the disease, or you are just curious, please spread the awareness.

Today there are so many sites on the internet that with just one click of the button you may get all the information that you need.

I know, for me, EYES are very important. Now, you think, how a young child of five will feel if he loses his eyes owing to retinoblastoma so early in his life.

For all the patients and their families, “Some people do care and God is with you always….”

DEATH

Posted by Sonu on October 29, 2007

A death is a shock.

A death is a mystery.

A death is a tragedy for all .

A death is a mistake.

A death is a happening.

But still a pain for all.

People go away without saying goodbye,

People just fall apart…

Relationships falter…

Hope disappears..

And silent tears rule the heart..

Love lingers back..

Trust leaves traces..

Life certainly goes on..

Sorrow learns to live.

Emotions run high.

Many decades does the memory spawn…

In some corner of heart and mind,

People do live again.

Through pleasant  thoughts and incidents,

They wipe out all the pain.

DEATH does not kill as we think it does.

It only lets LIFE to revise.

It caresses  hurt BUT only briefly…

AND lets people IMMORTALIZE!!!

A RANDOM STATISTICAL EVENT

Posted by Sonu on October 28, 2007

A RANDOM STATISTICAL EVENT

All those who have studied statistics at school or college know what it is all about. There is probability, variance, deviation and also errors.

BUT, did you know it applies to LIFE as well.

Ever come across people whom you instantly bind with without prior acquaintance. Slowly and surely someone creeps in your life and you are not even aware of it.

Is it just a random statistical event or was it meant to be so???

One life gets connected and things are never the same again. How many reasons will you find to justify these unknown things. Extra-ordinary events that forever change the face of reality.

Statistics then conncets up. The PROBABILITY of happening, the VARIANCE from normal life, the DEVIATION from everyday reality and the ERRORS of the past.

Tomorrow if you find someone whom you don’t know at all but still get connected to, then perhaps this may be a random statistical event OR on second thoughts, does something spiritual explains this???

No one can answer….

CRICKET OR POLITICS?

Posted by Sonu on October 27, 2007

In a biazzare turn of events, it has been declared that Virender Sehwag has replaced Rahul Dravid in the ODI squad for the first two one dayers against Pakistan.

Dravid has been out of form in two successive series but one cannot ignore his talent and mettle as a great batsman. Though he was a poor capatain but still as a player has been one of the best that India has produced. And, to drop him out of the team because of a sudden bad patch is a very shameless thing to do.

What’s even more funny is that to give a chance to a player like “Sehwag” who has been consistently out-of-form. Ever since he has been dubbed as the successor of Savhin Tendulkar, he has taken every effort to prove that it is not so (LOL).

With just an unbeaten 75 in the challenger trophy, he has nothing else to defend about. His role in twenty20 world cup was certainly not something to praise about. Anybody could have played the part. Now, don’t forget we are playing against Pakistan. It’s not going to be easy and Pak does have a strong bowling side which can prove difficult to tackle.

Chairman of the selection committee, Dilip Vengsarkar’s comments about both Dravid and Sehwag have certainly been lame. He stated that, “We decided to give him a break. He’s a great player and he will be back soon.” Now, that is a very stupid excuse. I think fans, do understand the difference between “rested” and “dropped”.

About Sehwag, he stated, “He has been among runs recently and even today he showed he was in good form”

Hellooooooooooo. I think Mr. Vengsarkar doesn’t watch cricket much these days. Since when, did Sehwag was in form? I think he has played a good match after an eternity. A so-called fiery 75 and that to against Indian bowlers.

Though I am not so great fan of Rahul Dravid but someone has to raise voice against injustice. He is a better player than Virender Sehwag.

Oh, we’ll get along in the one dayer’s I guess. But, one cannot ignore Dravid’s contribution to test cricket.

SO, is it really CRICKET or mere POLITICS?

Mr.Vengsarkar, I hope you are listening to fans pleas. Perhaps some day you’ll understand, that A GREAT PLAYER NEED NOT BE A GREAT SELECTOR.
